The Garmin Vivosmart 5 launched in April 2022 at $149.99 and has been the answer to a very specific question ever since: what is the slimmest Garmin you can buy that does not need a subscription? Every other week on the Garmin subreddit, someone asks that, and every other week the top reply is “Vivosmart 5.” We have worn one for the better part of a year, alongside a Fitbit Charge 6 and a Polar H10 chest strap, and the short version is that the reddit consensus is right. The long version is more interesting.

This is a band that almost nobody reviewed at launch because it looked boring. A slim plastic strap, a small monochrome OLED, no GPS, no ECG, no color screen, no music. In 2022 that read as “Garmin shipped a Vivosmart 4 with a slightly bigger screen and a new touch button.” Four years later it reads as something else: the only current Garmin product that still feels like a Basis Peak in your daily life. Slim, ignorable, multi-day battery, continuous heart rate, and a free app that does not nag you to upgrade. The original Basis Peak was a different decade of hardware, but the wearing experience is uncannily similar.

Cons

  • Monochrome OLED in 2022. Readable in sunlight, but it looks dated next to a Charge 6's color AMOLED.
  • Band-removal mechanism is too easy. We have had it pop off twice while pulling a sleeve over the watch.
  • Garmin Connect is dense, badly organized, and slow to open. The data is all there, but you have to dig.
  • No ECG, no skin-temperature variation, no irregular-rhythm notification. The sensor stack is one generation behind the Charge 6.
  • No onboard GPS; workouts use the phone's GPS via Connect tether, which drains the phone.
Best for: People who want a fitness band they can charge once a week, ignore for the rest of it, and never get pestered to upgrade an app.

The Vivosmart 5 ships with a USB-A charging clip, a small information card, and one band already installed. Garmin sells the small and large straps separately on garmin.com if you need the other size, around $25. The small fits wrists from 122 to 188mm; the large from 148 to 228mm. We tested the small on a 165mm wrist and it sat correctly without sliding.

The hardware itself is unchanged since 2022. There is no V5+, no Pro, no 2nd Gen. That is unusual for Garmin and is part of the reason we trust the long-term review: nothing material has changed about the device since launch, and the firmware updates have been incremental rather than rewriting features.

The design: slim, plastic, deliberately boring

The band is 10.5mm thick and 18mm wide at the case. For comparison, the Fitbit Charge 6 is 11.2mm thick and 22.7mm wide. The difference does not sound like much on paper. On the wrist it is the difference between “I notice I am wearing a tracker” and “I sometimes forget which arm it is on.” That matters more for sleep than for daytime use. The Vivosmart 5 vanishes overnight. The Charge 6 does not.

The case is matte plastic, not aluminum. The strap is silicone with a standard pin buckle. The display is a 0.5 by 1.1-inch monochrome OLED with a single capacitive button under the glass, plus a touchscreen. There is no rotating crown, no side button, no second touch button. Garmin’s choice was correct: any more interface would have ruined the device. You get one button, and most interactions are a swipe.

Yes, the display is monochrome in 2022. We want to spend a second on this because it is the one thing every reviewer flagged and almost nobody explained. Monochrome OLED draws less current than color, by a meaningful factor. The pixels are simpler, the controller is simpler, the backplane is simpler. Garmin chose monochrome because it is the single biggest reason this device gets six days of battery in a 14mm-thick case. Pick any modern color-AMOLED tracker and look at the battery numbers. The Charge 6 is rated at seven days; we get five with notifications on, four with always-on display. The Vivosmart 5 hits the same numbers with a smaller battery. That gap is the display.

In sunlight the monochrome screen is actually easier to read than a low-brightness AMOLED. Indoors it looks utilitarian, which is fine.

The band system, and a real annoyance

The Vivosmart 5 uses a Garmin-proprietary band system that we genuinely like and one specific thing about which we genuinely do not.

The like: bands swap in under five seconds without a tool. You push the case out of the band with a fingernail, drop a new one in, and it clicks. No spring bars, no pin tool, no scratched lugs. If you want to wear a black band to work and a green band on weekends, you can do that without a workshop. Garmin sells four colors plus a couple of seasonal patterns.

The annoyance: the same mechanism that lets a fingernail pop the band off lets a coat sleeve pop it off too. Twice in eight weeks of wear, we caught the case half-out of the band while pulling on a jacket. Once it landed on the floor; the other time it stayed in the sleeve. The Charge 6 uses a more secure quick-release that requires a deliberate squeeze and slide, and the Apple Watch’s lug system is more secure still. Garmin made a usability choice in favor of easy swapping, and we mostly agree with it, but you should know.

If you tend to wear your tracker under long sleeves and you handle clothes roughly, this is the single thing about the Vivosmart 5 that might push you to a Charge 6. It is fixable in the next revision, and the existing Vivosmart 5 is not getting that revision.

Sensors and what they actually measure

The full sensor list: optical wrist heart rate (Garmin’s Elevate v4 stack), an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, and an SpO2 sensor running through the same PPG hardware. There is no thermometer, no ECG electrode, no barometric altimeter, no GPS. Pulse Ox can run continuously or on-demand; the default is sleep-only.

The standout sensor is the wrist heart rate, and that surprised us.

On steady-state cardio (runs, rides, brisk walks), the Vivosmart 5 sat within 2 bpm of the H10’s average and lagged the strap by no more than one to two seconds when heart rate climbed. That is genuinely good. The 2018-era Garmin sensors (Vivosmart 4, Forerunner 645) were closer to 5-7 bpm on the same test and would routinely under-read during the first minute of a workout. Whatever Garmin did to the Elevate v4 algorithm in the last firmware cycle worked.

The harder test is intervals, and this is where we had a real surprise. We expected the Vivosmart 5 to track the Charge 6’s pattern: lag the strap on the way up, overshoot on the way down, miss short peaks entirely. It did not. On 30-second hard efforts, the Vivosmart 5 stayed within 5 bpm of the H10 on the peak and recovered at roughly the right slope. The Charge 6, on the same wrist on a different day, lagged by 8-10 bpm on the peak and took longer to recover. That is not a result we expected and not one most reviews mention. Garmin has been quietly upgrading the wrist HR algorithm for two years and nobody noticed because the hardware looked the same.

A caveat we have to include: PPG-based wrist sensors are still bad at strength work, where the wrist moves through positions that occlude the optical path. The Vivosmart 5 lost the signal entirely during deadlifts and floor presses. The Charge 6 and the Apple Watch fail the same way. If you are tracking strength HR, use a chest strap. SpO2 is what you would expect: a noisy, optical, finger-off measurement that broadly tracks the real number on a fingertip pulse oximeter but is not clinical. Garmin does not claim it is. Continuous Pulse Ox at night drains the battery hard, roughly halving real-world life. We left it on for two weeks, decided we did not look at the data, and turned it off.

Body Battery: Garmin’s quiet superpower

Body Battery is the feature most people who own a Garmin will tell you they actually use. It is a 0-100 score that estimates your current physiological “charge” based on heart-rate variability, resting heart rate, stress, sleep, and activity. It refills overnight if you sleep well and drains during the day, faster if you exercise or are stressed.

The reason it matters is not that the underlying science is unique. Whoop, Oura, and Fitbit all ship something similar; the math is roughly the same. The reason it matters is that Garmin does not charge for it. Whoop costs $30/month. Oura is $5.99/month. Fitbit’s daily readiness score is behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99/month. The Vivosmart 5’s Body Battery is in the free app, full stop. If you have a $150 band and never pay another cent, you still get the same class of metric that the subscription products are selling.

It is also good. We pay attention to ours and the trend lines match how we feel. After a poor night’s sleep we wake up at 40 and start climbing slowly. After a hard workout we drop 30 points. After a four-day cold we did not break 50 for a week. That is the right shape. The short version: it is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats, and lower variation at rest correlates with stress, poor sleep, and overtraining.

Two limits worth flagging. First, Body Battery only works after about a week of wear because Garmin needs a baseline. The first few days, the number is meaningless. Second, it cannot tell the difference between physiological stress and emotional stress; a tense meeting drains it the same way a tempo run does. That is true of every HRV-based readiness score; it is not Garmin’s failure.

Sleep tracking: present, free, mediocre

Sleep tracking on the Vivosmart 5 reports light, deep, and REM stages, total time, restlessness, average overnight HR, average respiration rate, and SpO2 if you have continuous Pulse Ox on. There is a sleep score from 0 to 100 in Garmin Connect each morning.

Here is the honest read: the staging is roughly in line with what Fitbit reports on the same wrist on the same night, but neither is close to a sleep lab. Consumer wearables in general are good at total sleep time (usually within 15 minutes of polysomnography) and bad at distinguishing deep from REM (often confused, even by Oura, which is the best of the consumer set per the de Zambotti 2019 study in Sleep, vol. 42). Garmin’s model is slightly less confident than Fitbit’s and noticeably less confident than Oura’s. You will see deep-sleep numbers swing 60 minutes between two seemingly identical nights.

The respiration and SpO2 overnight data is genuinely useful as a trend. We caught a low-grade respiratory infection two days before symptoms appeared because respiration was up four breaths per minute over baseline. That is the Basis Peak’s old promise of multi-signal ambient measurement, finally delivered on a $150 band.

Battery life: the seven-day claim, and reality

Garmin’s spec is seven days in smartwatch mode. Our real-world numbers over eight weeks:

  • Pulse Ox off, notifications on, one 45-minute workout per day: 5.5 to 6 days.
  • Pulse Ox off, notifications off, no GPS-tethered workouts: 7 days, sometimes a hair more.
  • Pulse Ox continuous (24/7), everything else default: 2.5 to 3 days.
  • Pulse Ox sleep-only, everything else default: 5 days.

The seven-day spec is honest if you read the asterisks. The realistic number for someone who wears it normally and gets phone notifications is six days. Compared against the Charge 6 (we get four to five real-world days with notifications and always-on off) and the Apple Watch SE (one day, less with workouts), this is a different category of device. You charge it on Sunday morning while you shower, and you forget about it until the following weekend.

The charging itself takes about 90 minutes from empty via the proprietary clip. No wireless charging, no USB-C; it is the same USB-A clip Garmin has used for years. We would prefer USB-C, but a 90-minute charge once a week is not a serious complaint.

Garmin Connect: the strength, and the long-running weakness

Garmin Connect is the app you use with this device, and it is the single biggest thing that determines whether the Vivosmart 5 will work for you. It is also the single biggest reason former Fitbit users feel disoriented when they switch.

The strengths are real and substantial. Connect is free, forever, no subscription. The data is yours: any day, any week, any year, exportable to CSV or FIT with one button. If you also have a Garmin Forerunner or an Edge bike computer, every device feeds into the same account and merges sensibly; the Vivosmart 5 will hand off heart-rate tracking to a Forerunner when you start a run. Connect has had a public API for years and most serious training platforms (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Runalyze, Intervals.icu) plug into it without trouble. Compared to the Fitbit-to-Google migration, which forced every long-time Fitbit user to merge accounts in 2023-2025, the Garmin model is a different relationship with the customer. You own the data, you can leave whenever, and the door is not locked behind a subscription.

The weakness is the app itself. Garmin Connect is dense, badly organized, and slow. The home screen shows you ten different scores you did not ask for. Finding a specific workout from three weeks ago takes four taps. The settings tree is six levels deep in places. The redesign Garmin shipped in late 2023 helped, but the underlying information architecture is still built for serious athletes who want to see every metric at once, not for someone who wants to know how they slept.

We would still rather use Garmin Connect than Fitbit’s current app, because the data ownership matters more to us than the polish. If you only care about polish, you are buying the Charge 6.

The Basis Peak heritage

There is a specific reason this band keeps coming up on this site. The Basis Peak was a square-OLED, slim-band, multi-day-battery, continuous-HR tracker with no subscription and a single readiness-style “habit” view. It died for reasons unrelated to its design — Intel walked away after the acquisition, the battery was recalled, the cloud was switched off on December 31, 2016. But the wearing experience the Peak invented, the “put it on, ignore it for a week, look at the data when you want it” experience, did not have a real successor on the wrist until this Garmin. The Fitbit Charge 6 gets close on hardware but loses on the subscription. The Withings ScanWatch lasts longer on a charge but is a different category of device. The Vivosmart 5 is the only current product that feels like a Peak on the wrist and acts like a Peak in the app.

It is not as good a device, by the way. The Peak’s hardware was ambitious for 2014, and Basis’s app, when it worked, did things Garmin Connect still does not. But the Peak’s design philosophy — slim, ambient, low-fuss, multi-day — is alive in this Garmin in a way it is not alive anywhere else.

Verdict

Buy the Garmin Vivosmart 5 if you want zero subscriptions and a slim band you can ignore for a week. That is the whole pitch. The wrist HR is better than the spec sheet suggests, Body Battery is the readiness score the subscription products want $10 a month for, the battery actually lasts, and the data is yours to export whenever. The monochrome screen is part of the deal — it is why the battery lasts — and the Garmin Connect app is the part you have to live with.

If you want a color display, FDA-cleared ECG, and slightly better sleep staging, and you do not mind paying $9.99 a month for the readiness score, the Fitbit Charge 6 is the alternative and we would not argue with you. If you want neither subscription nor a screen on your wrist at all, an Oura Ring on a different finger is a different conversation. For everyone else asking for a slim Garmin, this is the one. Four years on, it is still the answer.
