The Fitbit Charge 6 has been on one of our wrists since November 2023, which is roughly a month after Google launched it. We have worn it through one full marathon training block, two head colds, a hundred-odd sleep nights logged against an Oura Ring 3 for comparison, and a dozen HIIT sessions next to a Polar H10 chest strap. The short version: it is the most polished Charge to date and the most Google-flavored. Whether that combination is for you depends almost entirely on how much you trust Google with your health data and how willing you are to pay a monthly fee for the parts of the app that the marketing pushes hardest.
Fitbit Charge 6
The best Charge yet, and the closest thing on the market to what the Basis Peak was trying to be. A Google account requirement and Premium paywall keep it from being a clean recommendation.

- Google account is mandatory; there is no way around it as of mid-2025.
- Sleep Profile, Daily Readiness, and advanced sleep stages are gated behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99/month.
- Heart rate still lags during rapid HIIT intervals; the ML model helped but did not solve it.
- Data export goes through Google Takeout, which is awkward compared to Garmin Connect's one-click CSV.
The hardware: aluminum, a glass face, and a button that is not a button
The Charge 6 looks almost exactly like the Charge 5. The case is 36.7 mm long, 22.7 mm wide, and 11.2 mm thick, and it weighs about 38 grams with the silicone band. The shell switched from stainless steel to anodized aluminum, which Google said was for “a softer feel” but is also a few grams lighter. Build quality is good. After more than a year on a wrist the case has a couple of fine scratches at the corners and the band has stretched a little, which is normal for silicone.
The display is a 1.04-inch color AMOLED behind Gorilla Glass 3, with optional always-on. In direct summer sun, brightness on auto is fine for a glance. In a dim room at night, the lowest brightness is dim enough that it does not wake you up if you turn over. The Charge 5 had the same panel and the same complaint that the bezel was thick; the Charge 6 has the same bezel.
The thing worth understanding before buying is the side button. After the Charge 5 shipped without any button at all and got a wave of one-star reviews for it, Fitbit promised the Charge 6 would bring it back. What it actually brought back is a capacitive zone in the long edge of the aluminum case with a small haptic motor underneath. There is no mechanical click. You touch the zone and the motor buzzes to confirm. Fitbit calls this a “haptic side button” in the marketing, which is true but reads to most buyers as “a real button.” It is not.
In practice the zone works. It is faster than swiping through the Charge 5’s menus, the haptic gives you a clear yes/no, and after about two days you stop noticing. The complaint at launch — and you can still find it in Amazon reviews — was that people expected a physical click and felt misled. Worth flagging if you are buying for someone who reads marketing copy literally.
The display and the daily UI
The interface is a vertical scroll of tiles. Tap to enter a tile; the side zone takes you back. You get the time, steps, heart rate, exercise, ECG, SpO2, sleep, weather, timer, and a handful of Google shortcuts. There are about a dozen watch faces; most are tasteful, a few are not.
We left always-on display off for almost the whole review period. With raise-to-wake on, response is quick enough that you do not lose much. Turning always-on on drops battery from five-to-six days to roughly two-and-a-half, which mirrors the published spec.
Google services: the real Charge 6 differentiator
This is the first Charge with Google services built in. Specifically: Google Maps turn-by-turn directions on the wrist (you start navigation on the phone, the watch buzzes for turns), YouTube Music playback control, and Google Wallet for contactless payments at a contactless reader.
In daily use we used Wallet a lot, Music control occasionally, and Maps about twice. Maps on the Charge 6 is useful walking around an unfamiliar city; it is mostly useless cycling because you need to glance down and there is no audio. Music control works if you are a YouTube Music subscriber; it does nothing for Spotify, Apple Music, or Tidal, which are still the dominant services in the US, so the feature in practice is YouTube Music only. Wallet is the standout because it actually replaces a card.
What you do not get is on-device music storage, third-party apps, a microphone, or a speaker. The Charge 6 is a tracker with a few Google hooks bolted on, not a smartwatch.
Heart rate: better than the Charge 5, still lags HIIT
Google’s launch claim was that the Charge 6 uses a new machine-learning model for heart rate that reduces error during exercise by up to sixty percent compared to the Charge 5. That is a vague comparison and we treat it as marketing. The interesting question is how it performs against a real chest strap, which is the reference for wrist HR.
We ran the Charge 6 on one wrist and a Polar H10 chest strap paired to a separate watch over twelve sessions across roughly four months. Three were easy zone-2 runs, four were tempo runs, three were CrossFit-style HIIT, and two were heavy strength sessions.
The numbers, summarized:
- Resting and sleep: within 1-2 bpm of the H10 at all times.
- Zone-2 steady running: within 2-3 bpm of the H10, occasional 5 bpm gap when the wrist got sweaty.
- Tempo runs: within 3-5 bpm at the threshold, a hair low on the peaks.
- HIIT: the Charge 6 lagged the H10 on rapid spikes by five to fifteen seconds and smoothed the peaks. On a thirty-second burpee interval where the H10 peaked at 178 bpm, the Charge 6 peaked at 162 bpm and arrived at it half a beat after the interval ended.
- Strength training: the wrist HR was unreliable, as it always is during dead-hangs and grip-heavy lifts. This is a physics problem, not a Fitbit problem.
The ML model did help. We had the same setup with a Charge 5 for six months in 2022 and the HIIT lag was closer to twenty seconds with deeper undershoots. The Charge 6 is better. It is not, and on-wrist optical PPG cannot be, as fast as a chest strap. The general framing we use is in our longer wearable sensor accuracy piece.
If you are training by heart-rate zones and your sessions involve a lot of rapid transitions, buy a chest strap. The Charge 6 can pair to one over Bluetooth, which is a feature the Charge 5 did not have.
Sleep tracking: free score, paid profile, paid stages
Fitbit’s sleep tracking has been the best-in-class consumer offering since the original Charge HR, and the Charge 6 inherits the lineage. Every morning you get a Sleep Score from 0 to 100, broken into time asleep, depth, and restoration. That part is free.
Sleep Stages (light, deep, REM, awake) used to be free on the watch face but the granular stages summary and the “Sleep Profile” — the animal-archetype thing where Fitbit assigns you a “tortoise” or a “hummingbird” once a month — sit behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. Premium also unlocks Daily Readiness, the recovery-style score, and a deeper sleep history view. The free tier shows you the score and the basic stage chart; the paid tier shows you trends and the profile.
Against an Oura Ring 3 worn on the same nights, the Charge 6 agreed on total sleep time within ten minutes most nights, slightly underestimated wake time, and gave fairly similar stage breakdowns. Neither device is medical-grade sleep staging — that requires a polysomnogram — and we would not treat either as an authority on REM. As a directional input it works.
The skin-temperature variation chart is useful. The breathing-rate chart is useful. SpO2 overnight is useful if you have a reason to track it; see our SpO2 explainer for what those numbers mean.
ECG, SpO2, and the medical-adjacent features
The Charge 6 has FDA-cleared single-lead ECG. The clearance covers atrial fibrillation detection and was rolled out by firmware in early 2024, not at launch; the hardware was always capable but the software was held back. To take a reading you sit still, hold the side zone for thirty seconds, and the app produces a PDF you can email to a doctor.
We took twenty ECGs over the review period. Sixteen returned a clean sinus reading; three came back “inconclusive” because we had moved; one was flagged as possible AFib on a morning we were dehydrated and ran it three times — subsequent readings were sinus. A single-lead consumer ECG is not a twelve-lead clinical ECG and should not be treated as one. The clearance is for screening, not diagnosis. We expand on that distinction in our ECG explainer.
SpO2 is on-demand and overnight. It is the same sensor and roughly the same software as the Charge 5, and the readings are in the same ballpark as a fingertip pulse oximeter, with the usual ten-to-fifteen-second lag.
Battery: five to six days in real life
Fitbit’s spec is “up to 7 days.” We got five to six in normal use with always-on display off, all notifications on, sleep tracking every night, and one workout per day. Always-on display cuts that to about two and a half days. ECG and SpO2 measurements barely dent the battery. The charger is a proprietary pin-and-magnet pogo cable, which is fine until you forget it on a trip.
Charging from 10% to full takes about ninety minutes. Fitbit says fifteen minutes gets you to a full day of use, which matches our experience.
The app, post-Google migration
The Fitbit app — now a Google product — was redesigned in mid-2023 around the new You/Coach/You-tab structure. The redesign was widely disliked at launch and Fitbit walked back some of the worst changes (the missing daily steps tile, the hidden friends feed) over the following months. By mid-2026 it is a competent app that does what you need it to do and a few things you do not want it to.
What is good: the daily summary is fast, the sleep view is detailed, the Premium prompts are at least clustered in one place rather than scattered. What is bad: the social features have been gutted compared to pre-Google Fitbit, Challenges are mostly gone, and the app pushes Google ads-related opt-ins in ways that the Apple Health and Garmin Connect apps do not.
Data export goes through Google Takeout, which is the same export system as Gmail and Photos. You pick “Fitbit” from a list, request a dump, and a few hours later you get a zip file with your data as JSON. It works but it is the worst export experience in the major-brand wearables, and we say so every time we compare Fitbit and Garmin — Garmin Connect’s CSV export is two clicks and it is hard to give Fitbit a pass on this.
How it compares: Apple, Garmin, and the heritage question
For a smartwatch-leaning buyer, the Apple Watch SE 2nd gen is roughly twice the price but does much more. We have a full breakdown in our Apple Watch vs Fitbit health tracking piece. For a fitness-leaning buyer without a subscription, the Garmin Vivosmart 5 or Vivoactive 5 are the obvious comparisons; the Vivosmart 5 is a closer Charge 6 competitor in form factor, the Vivoactive 5 in feature set. The Charge 6 wins on display and ECG; Garmin wins on data export, training metrics, and the absence of a paywall.
The Charge 6 is also, if you care about this kind of thing, the closest spiritual successor to the Basis Peak we have seen on the market. The Peak was a slim continuous-HR band with multi-day battery and multi-signal sleep, in a daily-wear form factor. So is the Charge 6. The difference is mostly that the sensors are a decade better and the company behind it is now Google instead of Intel. We rank it first in our best fitness trackers list for that reason.
Buy if / skip if
Buy if:
- You want a slim, light tracker with multi-day battery and a useful display.
- ECG and SpO2 on a $160 band matter to you and you understand single-lead is screening, not diagnosis.
- You already use Google services and a Google account is not a deal-breaker.
- You are okay paying $80-$120 a year for Fitbit Premium if you want the deeper sleep and readiness features, or okay not having them.
Skip if:
- You do not want a Google account, full stop.
- You train by heart rate in HIIT and need sub-second accuracy — get a chest strap, regardless of what watch you wear.
- You want robust data export. Garmin is materially better here.
- You want a smartwatch. The Charge 6 is a tracker with Google hooks, not a watch that runs apps.
After a year on the wrist, the Charge 6 is the device we still reach for when we are not testing something else, which is the most honest review verdict we can give. The Google-account situation is the friction; the rest is the best Charge Fitbit has shipped.
