A few years ago, buying a fitness tracker meant paying for a fitness tracker. You handed over $150 or $200, you got a band, you opened the app, and the data was yours. Battery aside, the relationship ended at the checkout.

That is no longer the deal.

Oura added a $5.99-a-month membership in November 2021 and gated nearly every score behind it. Fitbit relaunched as Fitbit Premium in 2020 and has spent the years since moving its most-marketed features — Sleep Profile, Daily Readiness, Stress Management — onto the paid side of the wall. Whoop never pretended otherwise: the device is subscription-only by design, the strap is functionally a key fob for the service, and cancelling the membership turns it into an inert silicone bracelet.

The arithmetic is worth doing once, in public. A $299 Oura Ring Gen 3 plus three years of $5.99 monthly membership is $215 in fees on top of the hardware, for a total of $514. A $299 Whoop 4.0 with the cheapest 12-month plan at $239 is essentially $239 every year, forever — over five years that is $1,494. Even Fitbit Premium at $9.99 a month, on a $159 Charge 6, adds up to $519 over three years if you take the upsell. None of these companies highlight the multi-year total. They highlight the monthly figure, because the monthly figure is the one their pricing research told them you can swallow.

The good news is the alternative still exists. There are real, currently-shipping wearables that you can buy once and use forever, with no recurring fee for the core data. Below are the four we would actually buy in 2026, the asterisk on Fitbit, and the honorable-mention case for the Apple Watch.

What “no subscription” actually means here

Three companies — Garmin, Withings, and Polar — sell wearables where every raw metric is free in the included app. No paywall on sleep stages, no paywall on heart rate variability, no paywall on training load. You buy the device, you keep the data.

That is not the same thing as “no upsell.” Garmin sells a Connect+ tier with AI-generated coaching content; Withings sells a Withings+ tier with guided programs; Polar has Polar Flow Premium for coach-style analysis. The difference is what sits behind the paywall. On all three platforms, what is paywalled is interpretation and content, not the underlying numbers. You can ignore the upsell, never pay a cent, and still see every metric the sensor produced.

That is the bar we are holding products to. Sleep stages: free. Heart rate variability: free. Stress score: free. Recovery or readiness score: free. Full historical data export: free.

Fitbit and Oura do not clear that bar. Whoop does not even try.

The four picks

1. Garmin Vivosmart 5 — the overall winner

The clearest 'buy once, own forever' tracker on the market. Every Garmin metric is free, the data export is excellent, and the price is $149.

Pros

  • $149 MSRP and frequently $119-129 on sale. Cheapest option on this list by a wide margin.
  • No subscription, full stop. Sleep stages, Body Battery, stress, Pulse Ox, respiration, women's health tracking — all in the free Garmin Connect app.
  • Best-in-class data export. Pull a full FIT or CSV of any day, week, or year directly from Garmin Connect with no upsell screen in the way.
  • Seven-day battery life that holds up in practice. We get six with overnight Pulse Ox on.
  • Open API. Third-party tools (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Runalyze, HRV4Training) read Garmin data natively with no extra fee.

Cons

  • Small monochrome OLED. Readable, but a step down from the Charge 6's color AMOLED.
  • No ECG, no skin-temperature variation, no irregular-rhythm notification. The sensor stack is a generation behind Fitbit's flagship.
  • Sleep stage accuracy is the weakest of the four picks here — Garmin's own user forums are candid about it.
  • Garmin Connect's UI is dated. It will show you ten different scores you did not ask for and bury the one you did.
Best for: Anyone who wants a slim, light, daily-wear tracker with no monthly fee and the best data portability in the category.

We have written elsewhere that the Vivosmart 5 is the closest thing the modern market has to the original Basis Peak ethos: put it on, forget about it, the data is yours. It is also the cheapest device on this list, by a margin that matters at the entry-level price point.

The compromise is sensor generation. Garmin caught up on optical heart-rate accuracy around 2022 and stopped pushing the sensor stack forward in the Vivosmart line; if you want ECG or skin-temperature trends you have to step up into a Venu, or sideways to Withings. The sleep model is also visibly less confident than Fitbit’s — it will swing between “you slept well” and “you slept badly” on nights that felt identical, and Garmin is honest that the model is movement-and-HR driven rather than multi-sensor.

If you treat sleep as a directional metric — am I trending up or down this week — the Vivosmart 5 is fine. If you want stage-by-stage precision, the Withings below or an Oura is better, and you have to decide whether the precision is worth the subscription. We think for most readers it is not.

2. Withings ScanWatch 2 — the upgrade pick

Pros

  • Hybrid design with analog hands and a small OLED above the dial. Looks like a watch in a meeting.
  • Thirty days of battery life on Withings's spec sheet. We get 22-26 days in real use with continuous HR on, which is still six times anything else here.
  • FDA-cleared ECG (510(k) K221976) with irregular-rhythm notification by amendment in 2023. One of the better-validated consumer ECG systems on the market.
  • TempTech24/7 module measures skin temperature continuously through the night. Used for cycle tracking and early-illness signals.
  • Withings's data export is genuinely good — every measurement you have recorded, as CSV, from your account page.
  • No subscription required for stages, HRV, or temperature trends. Withings+ exists but adds guided programs, not raw data.

Cons

  • Small OLED is fine for a glance, not for navigating a UI. If you want to scroll workout details on your wrist, this is the wrong watch.
  • $349 MSRP. Most expensive on this list, tied with the Vantage M3.
  • Slow to surface notifications compared to a full smartwatch.
Best for: People who want continuous health tracking but are tired of looking at a screen on their wrist.

The ScanWatch 2 wins on aesthetics and on the question of charging. A 22-to-26-day real-world battery removes the charging ritual entirely; you take it off once every three weeks, you put it on the puck, you wear it again. We have linked the device in our best health trackers roundup for the same reason — it is the only product in the category that hides the technology inside a normal-looking watch and still ships an FDA-cleared ECG.

The TempTech24/7 sensor is the part most former Basis Peak owners ask about, because continuous skin temperature was a Peak feature in 2014 and almost no one shipped it again until Withings did. The sensor sits against the wrist and samples every 10 seconds through the night. The app surfaces it as a deviation from your personal baseline, the same logic Oura and Apple use. It is the cleanest current implementation we have seen, and it is included in the price of the watch.

3. Garmin Forerunner 165 — for runners

Pros

  • Multi-band GPS that holds the signal in tree cover and between buildings. Tested over a 12K loop in dense central London, we lost the lock for less than 20 meters.
  • Full Garmin training metrics — VO2 max estimate, training load, race predictor, recovery time — all on the free tier.
  • AMOLED display that is genuinely readable in midday sun. Big jump over the older MIP screens on the 55.
  • Eleven-day battery in smartwatch mode, 19 hours of continuous GPS. We confirmed the 11-day figure with always-on display off.
  • Same free Garmin Connect app, same open API, same FIT/CSV export as the Vivosmart 5.
  • Music storage on the Music edition for phone-free runs.

Cons

  • $249 (base) or $299 (Music). Mid-range price for a feature set that the Vivosmart 5 mostly matches outside of GPS.
  • No ECG, no skin-temperature variation. Garmin still keeps those sensors out of the Forerunner mid-tier.
  • Touchscreen plus five buttons is more controls than the Vivosmart 5; some daily-wear users find it overkill.
Best for: Recreational and serious runners who want pace, distance, route mapping, and training-load analytics without paying Strava Premium or anyone else for them.

The Forerunner 165 is the device we point runners at when they tell us they were about to pay Strava $79 a year for the analytics. Strava’s premium features — pace analysis, fitness and freshness, segment performance — are useful, but the underlying training-load model on Garmin Connect is at least as good and is included in the price of the watch. Pair the 165 with the free Strava tier for the social layer and you have the runner setup most former Premium subscribers ended up with after the 2023 price hike.

The only honest reason to skip it for the Vivosmart 5 is if you do not actually run. The 165 is a watch-sized device with a dedicated workout-button workflow. If your activity is walking, gym sessions, and sleep, you are paying $100 extra for a multi-band GPS chip you will use twice a week.

4. Polar Vantage M3 — the athlete pick

The serious-training pick from the company that built the original chest strap industry. No subscription, very good sleep model, slightly painful app design.

Pros

  • Excellent sleep model. Polar's Nightly Recharge and Sleep Plus Stages have been independently validated against PSG more times than most consumer-wearable models — see Saario et al. 2024 in the Journal of Sleep Research.
  • Training Load Pro and Recovery Pro are Polar's longest-running analytics features and are well-respected by coaches. Free.
  • Multi-band GPS, route-back navigation, structured workout import. Triathlon mode is a one-button setup.
  • Polar's open data export via Polar Flow account download. Plays nicely with TrainingPeaks and Strava.

Cons

  • $349 MSRP and the price holds. Polar discounts less aggressively than Garmin.
  • Polar Flow app and web UI is genuinely awkward. Workouts live in one tab, sleep in another, recovery in a third. After ten years it still feels like three apps stitched together.
  • Sleep-stage accuracy is strong but the model assumes one continuous sleep period. Shift workers and split-sleepers get strange results.
  • Wrist-based optical HR is fine for steady-state and weak for intervals. Polar's own marketing pairs this watch with their H10 chest strap for a reason.
  • Smaller third-party ecosystem than Garmin.
Best for: Multisport athletes — triathletes, gym-and-run people, swimmers — who want training load and recovery analytics without paying Garmin or Whoop for them.

Polar is the Finnish company that invented consumer heart-rate monitoring in 1977 and has spent the years since being out-marketed by Garmin while quietly shipping some of the better physiological models in the business. The Vantage M3 is the current mid-priced expression of that. The sensor stack does not match Withings, the app does not match Garmin, but the underlying sleep and recovery models are arguably the most rigorously studied in the category, and the whole thing is yours when you buy it.

We put the Vantage M3 fourth because most readers will be better served by one of the first three picks. If you specifically train against load and recovery, and you are not married to Garmin’s ecosystem, it is the right answer.

The asterisk on Fitbit

We get asked about the Charge 6 enough that it deserves its own section. The short answer is: yes, the Charge 6 works without Fitbit Premium, and a lot of people use it that way. The longer answer is that what works and what does not is uncomfortably uneven.

What works on the free tier: steps, distance, floors, continuous heart rate, resting heart rate trend, basic sleep stages (light/deep/REM/wake), workout tracking with auto-detect, exercise heart-rate zones, SpO2 spot reading, skin temperature variation, ECG (510(k) K212282), irregular-rhythm notification, breathing rate, all the usual fitness counters.

What requires Fitbit Premium ($9.99/month or $79.99/year): Sleep Profile (the monthly animal-archetype report), Daily Readiness Score, Stress Management Score (the daily one with the breakdown), the more detailed Health Metrics dashboard with multi-week views, guided workouts, mindfulness content, and the Wellness Report.

The pattern is the pattern. The base metrics are free because they have to be — a tracker that did not show your step count would be unsellable. The features Fitbit’s marketing pushes hardest, the ones on the box and in the App Store screenshots, are the ones behind the paywall. Daily Readiness in particular is the closest analog to the Oura Readiness score, and it is the single feature that comes up most in “I thought I was buying this” complaints.

If you already own a Charge 6 and you like it, you can absolutely use it without Premium, and we have written up the line-by-line tradeoffs in the Fitbit Charge 6 review. If you are buying new and you specifically want no subscription, the Vivosmart 5 gives you a similar form factor at $10 less and never pushes a paywall in your face. That is the simple version.

Honorable mention: the Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is genuinely subscription-free for health data. There is no Apple Health paywall. ECG, irregular-rhythm notifications, blood oxygen (on the models that have the sensor), heart-rate zones, sleep tracking, workout tracking, even the AFib history feature: all included with the device, no monthly fee, ever.

Fitness+ exists, but it is a workout-content service — guided runs, yoga sessions, strength routines — and it does not unlock any sensor or data feature. Cancel it and the health data continues working exactly as before.

So why isn’t it on the list?

The Apple Watch only pairs with an iPhone. There is no Android app, there has never been one, and Apple has been very clear there will not be one. If you have an Android, the Apple Watch is not a product you can use. That alone disqualifies it from a general-purpose buying guide.

Even on iPhone, the lock-in goes further than the pairing. Apple Health data is exportable, technically, but the export is a single 50-megabyte XML file with no easy CSV path, and most third-party apps either need their own native iOS reader or rely on Apple’s own SDK. Practically, the data is portable in the sense that it is on your device; it is not portable in the sense that you can move to a different platform and bring it with you.

That is a different kind of subscription. You are not paying $5.99 a month. You are paying with the requirement to keep buying iPhones. For some readers that is a fine tradeoff — the iPhone is the phone they wanted anyway — and the Apple Watch SE or Series 10 is a perfectly defensible pick. For everyone else, the four trackers above will treat your data better and cost less over five years.

What to buy

We have run out of one-sentence summaries on these pieces and we are not going to invent another, so here is the practical version.

If you want the cheapest, slimmest, most-portable-data tracker on the market and you are not chasing a particular feature: Vivosmart 5, $149, done. It is the one we buy for relatives.

If you can spend more and you want the device to look like a real watch: ScanWatch 2, $349, and it is also the only ECG-cleared pick here. The 30-day battery is real.

If you run more than three times a week: Forerunner 165, $249. The dedicated GPS is worth the extra hundred over the Vivosmart.

If you train hard and you trust Polar’s sleep and recovery models more than Garmin’s: Vantage M3, $349, and accept that the app is going to annoy you for the next several years.

If you have an iPhone and you do not care about data portability or the daily-charge ritual, the Apple Watch is a fine default — just be honest that the lock-in is real, even if the monthly bill is not.

What you should not do, in 2026, is buy a new wearable with a subscription baked in unless you have specifically decided you want the service. The hardware-only model is not extinct. It is sitting on four product pages at three companies and it costs less per year than almost any rival.
