Pick a Fitbit and you are picking a Google product. Pick a Garmin and you are picking a watch from a Kansas company that has been making GPS hardware since 1989, is listed on the NYSE under the ticker GRMN, and has no consumer-grade subscription tier. That is not a marketing distinction. It shapes how the device handles your account, how it handles your data, what it costs you over five years, and what happens if the parent company changes its mind.
We have been comparing the two lines, device by device, since the Charge 2 and the Vivosmart 3 were the modern pairing. The argument has changed. In 2016 it was about which tracker counted steps better. In 2026 it is about who owns the back end.
The two companies, briefly
Fitbit launched in 2007, IPO’d in June 2015, and was acquired by Google in a deal that closed January 14, 2021 for a headline price of roughly $2.1 billion. Since the close, the visible direction has been steady: standalone Fitbit accounts are gone (existing users were pushed to migrate to Google accounts on a rolling deadline that finished in 2025), the developer SDK and the Versa/Sense third-party app gallery have been wound down, and the Fitbit desktop apps were pulled from the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store. The Fitbit brand persists, mostly as a name on the Charge and Inspire boxes. The Pixel Watch is where Google is putting the new sensor work.
Garmin is an independent public company, founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao, headquartered in Olathe, Kansas, with a market cap that bounces around $35-40 billion. Its fitness segment is one of five — the others being outdoor, aviation, marine, and auto OEM — which matters more than it sounds, because Garmin’s wearable business is funded by businesses that have nothing to do with consumer wearables. There is no quarterly pressure to add a subscription. There has never been a major acquisition that ended a product line.
This is the structural difference behind every other difference in this comparison.
The Charge 6 and the Vivosmart 5, head to head
Both companies still ship a slim wrist band as their volume product. Fitbit’s is the Charge 6, launched October 2023 at $159.95. Garmin’s is the Vivosmart 5, launched April 2022 at $149.99 and still in the catalogue. They are the cleanest one-to-one comparison the two lines offer, and they are the devices most shoppers actually choose between.

A few of those rows are doing more work than the rest. Subscription is the one we get email about most often. Data export is the one almost nobody checks before buying and almost everybody wishes they had.
Fitbit Charge 6
The best Fitbit fitness band, with the catch that the most interesting features are behind Premium.

If you only read this far: the Charge 6 is the more capable single device, the Vivosmart 5 is the cheaper one to live with over time. Five years of Premium is $600. We have a whole piece on trackers that skip the subscription for anyone allergic to that math.
Subscription: where the lines diverge
Fitbit Premium is $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. New devices include a six-month trial, after which the paywall comes up on:
- Daily Readiness Score (the morning “are you recovered” number).
- Sleep Profile (the monthly archetype: Bear, Hummingbird, Tortoise, etc.).
- Advanced sleep analytics, including detailed sleep stage trends across weeks.
- The full stress management dashboard and guided breathing programs.
- Mindfulness audio.
- Workout videos and personalized recommendations.
What stays free: steps, distance, heart rate (live and resting), basic sleep stages for the previous night, SpO2 reading, ECG reading. That is enough device for someone using it as a step counter. It is noticeably less device than the box implies.
Garmin Connect has no equivalent tier. Body Battery, sleep stages, Sleep Score, HRV Status, Training Readiness, Training Status, VO2 max, Race Predictor, Performance Condition, recovery time, and the full Garmin Coach training plans are all included with the watch purchase. The closest thing to a paid Garmin service is Garmin Connect+, an optional premium tier the company added in 2024 for AI-generated insights and an ad-free experience — but the underlying metrics are all visible without it. Inreach satellite messaging is a separate subscription tied to the inReach hardware, not to fitness data.
The five-year cost difference, if you pay Premium continuously, is real. Charge 6 plus five years of Premium at the annual rate: about $560. Vivosmart 5 with no subscription: $150. Even allowing for the Charge 6’s better feature set, that is a significant gap for the same wrist real estate.
Who owns the data, and how hard it is to leave
This is the part the brochures don’t cover and is the part you most regret not asking about three years in.
Garmin’s data export has been quietly excellent for years. Inside Garmin Connect on the web, you can request a full export of every metric the watch has ever recorded. It arrives within minutes in plain CSV and the original .FIT files. .FIT is the format the rest of the cycling and running world uses; Strava, TrainingPeaks, Final Surge, intervals.icu, and Zwift all import it natively. Garmin also has a public Health API and a Connect IQ developer program with documented endpoints. None of this requires a subscription. None of it costs anything. None of it is being deprecated.
Fitbit’s data export, since the Google takeover, runs through Google Takeout. You go to takeout.google.com, select Fitbit, request an archive, and wait. Last time we ran it for the Charge 6 the archive came in two and a half hours. The data is JSON, in many small files, organized by day. There is no .FIT, no .CSV by default. The old Fitbit Web API still exists but is officially deprecated for new applications, and the third-party export tools that used to bridge Fitbit to Strava (Sync Solver, Tapiriik) have been on borrowed time since 2022.
The point is not that Google is hostile to your data. The point is that Garmin treats portability as a feature and Fitbit treats it as compliance. If you have eight years of step counts and sleep nights you would rather not lose, that asymmetry is worth knowing about before you commit.
Accuracy: the gap is narrower than it used to be
Garmin had a multi-year lead on wrist-based heart rate during sport. The fourth-generation Elevate sensor on the Forerunner 255, 955, and Fenix 7 was, in repeated independent testing — DC Rainmaker’s chest-strap comparisons across 2022 and 2023 are the reference — within a few beats per minute of a Polar H10 strap during steady-state running. Fitbit’s older Charge 4 and Charge 5 lagged the strap during intervals and over-smoothed during recovery.
The Charge 6 changed the picture in 2024. Fitbit re-tuned the optical stack and shipped a firmware update in March 2024 that meaningfully tightened heart-rate tracking during high-intensity work. DC Rainmaker’s follow-up testing in mid-2024 placed the Charge 6 close to the Vivosmart 5 for running, and ahead of it for cycling — likely because the Charge 6 has more aggressive motion artifact filtering for handlebar-vibration cases. For everyday metrics — resting heart rate, sleep heart rate, step counts, distance — both devices are within the kind of margin where the differences disappear into normal physiological noise. Neither is a medical device for anything except their FDA-cleared AFib screening (Charge 6 and Sense 2 on the Fitbit side; Venu 2 Plus, Venu 3, parts of the Fenix 7 Pro / Epix Pro line on Garmin’s side).
A chest strap is still more accurate than both, especially during lifting, HIIT, and any motion that involves the forearm. That has not changed and probably will not.
The app experience: polish vs depth
The Fitbit app is the better-looking of the two. It has been steadily redesigned since the Google acquisition, and the 2024 visual refresh leaned harder on the Material You design language: rounded cards, color theming, large numbers. The Today tab is clean. Daily Readiness, when you have it, surfaces at the top. Workouts have video summaries. The home screen feels like the kind of thing a designer was allowed to spend time on.
It is also, increasingly, an ad surface. Fitbit Premium is advertised in-app. Pixel Watch upsell modules appear on the home tab. A “Try Fitbit Premium” card slots into the morning view if your trial has lapsed. None of this is offensive; all of it is noticeable.
Garmin Connect is the opposite trade. The app is dense, technically sophisticated, and visually frozen somewhere around 2019. The home screen is a long scroll of cards: steps, sleep, Body Battery, HRV Status, training status, last activity, intensity minutes, stress, calories, hydration, weight, women’s health, and a dozen more depending on what your watch supports. Tapping any of them opens a screen with graphs that go back years. There is no upsell. There are no ads. There is a small amount of social feed you can ignore.
For someone who wants to look at a single number in the morning, Fitbit wins. For someone who wants to compare this week’s HRV trend to the same week last year, Garmin wins, and it is not close. We use both daily and neither feels strictly better — they are aimed at different brains.
Device families: Garmin’s catalog is much bigger
Fitbit’s hardware line is now four devices:
- Inspire 3 ($99): the budget band, no ECG, no SpO2 spot-check, three colors.
- Charge 6 ($159.95): the flagship band, covered above.
- Versa 4 ($199.95): the entry smartwatch, AMOLED, 6+ day battery, no ECG.
- Sense 2 ($299.95): the premium smartwatch, AMOLED, ECG, EDA, skin-temperature.
The Pixel Watch sits adjacent to but outside the Fitbit brand; it runs Wear OS and uses Fitbit’s tracking stack underneath.
Garmin’s line, by contrast, is segmented by what you do.
- Vivosmart 5 ($149.99): the slim band.
- Vivomove series ($299-$499): hybrid analog/digital watches that look like normal watches with a hidden OLED.
- Vivoactive 5 ($299.99): the lifestyle smartwatch.
- Venu 3 ($449.99) and Venu 3S ($449.99): the AMOLED lifestyle smartwatches with ECG.
- Forerunner 55, 165, 265, 265S, 965 ($199-$599): the runner’s line, with GPS as the headline feature.
- Fenix 7 / 8 series ($699-$1099): the outdoor flagship, multi-week battery, solar options, sapphire glass, mapping.
- Epix Pro ($899-$1099): the Fenix’s AMOLED sibling.
- Instinct 2 / Crossover ($299-$549): the rugged, simple-display sibling.
- Forerunner 965, Enduro 3, Tactix 7: niche flagships for ultra-distance, military, and aviation crossover.
Roughly two dozen current SKUs against Fitbit’s four. The Garmin range exists because Garmin has not had a single moment to consolidate it; the Fenix and Forerunner lines have evolved every two years for a decade without a corporate transition. The Fitbit range is what is left after the Google integration and the Pixel Watch absorbed most of the smartwatch budget.

Who wins for which user
This is the part most readers actually want.

For the cases that don’t fit on that table: hikers and outdoor users almost always end up with a Fenix or an Instinct. Triathletes want a Forerunner 965 or a Fenix 8. Office workers who want a watch they don’t have to think about probably want the Vivomove or the Vivoactive on the Garmin side, or the Versa 4 on the Fitbit side. The Pebble inheritance, briefly
Fitbit bought Pebble in December 2016 for about $40 million and most of Pebble’s technology did not survive into Fitbit OS. The Pebble watch app store, the third-party developer ecosystem, and the always-on low-power monochrome e-paper display were all shut down. The Pebble cloud went offline in June 2018. What Fitbit kept was a handful of people, the notification stack, and some of the watch-face logic that ended up in the Versa line.
What Fitbit took from Pebble that mattered was the lesson that a wearable can be useful without trying to be an iPhone. The original Versa, launched April 2018, was visibly Pebble-influenced: a multi-day battery smartwatch with a simple app model and notification mirroring. That lineage is faint in the Sense 2 and gone in the Pixel Watch.
Garmin never bought a smartwatch company. Its Connect IQ store has had a steady, modest developer community since 2015 and has never been deprecated. The watch faces and data fields ecosystem is small and durable. For users who want to install a third-party stress app or a custom screen, Garmin is, by default, the more open platform.
What we would actually buy
If we had to pick one device of each and recommend it to a smart friend:
- Fitbit side: the Charge 6, with the caveat that Premium is the real product. Check Charge 6 price on Amazon. The Sense 2 is more capable but the Versa 4 sits awkwardly between the Charge and the Pixel Watch and we struggle to find a buyer for it.
- Garmin side: the Vivosmart 5 for the casual user, the Forerunner 265 for the runner, the Fenix 8 for anyone who genuinely uses the outdoor features. Across the line we lean Garmin for anyone who plans to keep the watch for more than two years, exports data, runs more than a few times a week, or has any allergy to subscriptions. We lean Fitbit for sleep-focused users who will use Premium, Pixel owners, and people who care about the ECG on a slim band. For everyone else — and this is the honest answer — the difference between picking up a Vivosmart 5 and a Charge 6 will be smaller than the difference between wearing either of them consistently for a year and not wearing it.
The question that used to matter — which company makes the better wrist sensor — is mostly settled, and the answer is “both, within a few bpm.” The question that matters now is which company you trust to be running the back end in 2031.
