Most “best fitness tracker” lists rank by price band, which is the wrong axis. A $50 band and a $400 hybrid watch are not really competing; they answer different questions about how a tracker fits into your life. After four months of parallel testing, the five devices below cover the questions we actually hear from readers.
We’ve worn every product on this list for at least eight weeks of daily use, slept in them, swum in them (where rated), and cross-checked their heart-rate output against a Polar H10 chest strap during structured workouts. The Charge 6 is the tracker we’d buy if we could only own one. It wakes up, counts steps, watches your heart, logs your sleep, and stays out of your way, all without a recurring payment to see the numbers. After the Google acquisition closed in early 2021 we were braced for Fitbit to deteriorate; on the Charge 6 specifically, it hasn’t.
The ECG works. It uses the same hardware platform as the Sense 2 and carries 510(k) clearance K231696 for AFib detection, meaning readings are validated against medical reference recordings rather than a marketing claim. We’ve taken about 40 spot ECGs over four months; the device declined three (cold hands) and produced sinus rhythm classifications that matched a Kardia 6L within a beat on the rest.
Battery life is the biggest improvement over the Charge 5. Fitbit claims seven days; with continuous HR, all-day stress tracking, and one GPS-tracked run every other day, we land between five and a half and six and a half days. That’s the best of any tracker on this list with a real screen.
The frustration is the capacitive side button. Fitbit ditched the physical button in the Charge 5 and got hammered for it, restored a capacitive one for the Charge 6, and it still does not work reliably when wet. Garmin’s pricing model is the reason we keep recommending the Vivosmart 5 even though its hardware is starting to age. You pay once. You get the device. The app is free. The advanced training metrics (Body Battery, stress score, Pulse Ox, women’s health, recovery time) are not behind a paywall. Garmin Connect has been like this since 2010, through three rounds of competitor subscription rollouts, and we trust the company will not flip on it.
Battery is the other reason. Garmin’s small form factor is efficient: continuous HR on, notifications on, one connected GPS workout every other day, we get between six and seven days. That matches Fitbit’s Charge 6 without the GPS hardware, so it’s a fairer fight on the band side.
What you give up is mostly the recent stuff. No on-board GPS; the Vivosmart 5 hands GPS off to your phone, which means an extra battery hit on the phone and a forgotten-phone problem if you run without it. No ECG; if AFib detection matters the Vivosmart is the wrong device. The monochrome OLED is fine indoors and squints-only in bright sun. Sleep tracking, while consistent night-to-night, overestimates total sleep by about half an hour against a Polar H10 plus a manual log.

If you already own an iPhone and want one device that does notifications, payments, and fitness, the SE 3 is the value pick. It still has no ECG — that remains Series-only — but this generation added the always-on display, wrist temperature sensing, and Apple’s sleep score, closing most of the gap to the Series that mattered day to day. What it keeps is what defines the Apple Watch experience: the chip, the haptics, the watchOS app library, and the safety features (crash detection, fall detection) that arguably matter more than the medical sensors for most people.
For fitness specifically the SE is competent if unremarkable. Optical HR on the Apple Watch is among the most accurate wrist-based readings we measure at rest and during steady-state cardio; it falls apart on HIIT the way every other optical sensor does.
Why this is on the list: at $249 the SE 3 is close to the Charge 6’s $159 territory once you factor in the smartwatch features the Charge 6 doesn’t have. The full-sensor Series models enter a different category. If you want ECG, get a Series; if you want an Apple Watch, get the SE 3.

The ScanWatch 2 solves a specific problem: most fitness trackers look like fitness trackers. The ScanWatch 2 reads on a meeting-room glance as a small steel dress watch with a guilloché dial and Roman numerals. The PMOLED window is the size of a subdial. You can wear it to a wedding without it looking out of place.
Underneath the analog hands the sensors are serious. Withings has had FDA clearance for ECG since 2020 on the original ScanWatch (K200948); the ScanWatch 2 carries an updated clearance, K212370, for AFib detection. The SpO2 sensor is FDA-cleared as well, which is rare. Apple and Garmin sell SpO2 as a “wellness” feature, not a medical one. The defining new sensor is Withings’ TempTech24/7, which tracks continuous body-temperature deviation rather than spot readings, useful as a cycle and illness signal.
The trade-offs are real. The ScanWatch 2 is not for someone who wants to start a workout from their wrist and have GPS map their route; that lives in the app, after the fact. The display is text-only and small enough that long notifications get cut off. Default heart-rate sampling is at ten-minute intervals, fine for daily trend data but useless for minute-by-minute HRV. Continuous HR is a toggleable setting and cuts battery to about ten days from the headline 25-30.

A titanium ring that does sleep and recovery tracking better than anything on the wrist, provided you accept the subscription.

- Useless as a daytime activity tracker: step counts run consistently low
If you have ever taken a watch off to sleep because it was uncomfortable, the Oura Ring is the answer. The Gen 3 is a 4-6 gram titanium ring with three optical heart-rate sensors and a continuous skin-temperature sensor against the palmar side of the finger. Anatomically that is a much more stable optical site than the back of the wrist. The data quality on sleep is the best we have measured outside of a clinical lab.
Oura’s sleep-stage classification was validated against polysomnography in a 2021 study (Altini and Kinnunen, Sleep) and came out within a few percentage points of clinical accuracy on REM and deep sleep duration. No other consumer wearable has produced comparable peer-reviewed validation. Skin temperature on the Oura is the most sensitive illness-onset signal we’ve tested; we’ve had it flag deviation 12-36 hours before a felt fever on three separate cases over the past year.
The subscription is the catch and we’re not going to soft-pedal it. Every Gen 3 ring sold after December 2021 requires a $5.99/month membership for the app’s “scores” and trends; without it you see raw data only. Oura grandfathered earlier owners into perpetual free access, but new buyers do not get that. The Gen 3 also has no display, so it cannot tell you the time, your current heart rate, or whether you got a text. If you want a tracker that also functions as a watch, this is the wrong device. We tested another nine products for this update. Three are worth explaining because we know readers will ask.
Whoop 4.0. Whoop produces excellent HRV and recovery data and the strap is comfortable for 24/7 wear. It is also subscription-only ($30/month or $239/year), there is no display whatsoever, and the hardware is essentially leased: you cannot use it without an active membership. For people who want recovery coaching it is a credible choice, but it doesn’t fit the definition of a fitness tracker most readers are buying. We rank it next to Oura in the Oura vs Whoop comparison.
Polar Vantage V3. Polar’s sensor accuracy is, frankly, the best on the wrist. The Vantage V3’s optical HR and ECG-based recovery work are excellent, and the company has a 50-year history with chest straps no one else can claim. We did not include it because US retail distribution has been patchy since 2023. Amazon listings appear and disappear, the official Polar US store ships from the Netherlands with variable customs charges, and warranty service is slower than competitors. In Europe, the Vantage V3 belongs on this list. In the US it is hard enough to buy and service that we cannot put it in front of a general audience.
Samsung Galaxy Fit 3. At $59 the Fit 3 is the cheapest credible band on the market, and on Samsung Galaxy phones it works well. Off Samsung, it loses most of its features. The Samsung Health app is mandatory, several features (advanced sleep, women’s health) require a Samsung account, and Apple Health integration is essentially absent. We could not in good conscience recommend it to a reader who does not already own a Samsung phone, which knocks out roughly half of US smartphone owners.
A few other devices (Amazfit GTR Mini, Xiaomi Mi Band 8, Fitbit Inspire 3) are competent but did not displace anything above. The Inspire 3 is a fine $99 option for kids and budget shoppers but is meaningfully less capable than the Charge 6 a few dollars up.

How we evaluated these
We weight five factors when we score a tracker, in roughly this order:
- Sensor accuracy under realistic conditions. Verified against a Polar H10 chest strap during HIIT, steady-state cardio, and cold-weather running. Most wrist optical sensors look fine on a stationary BPM check and fall apart at high heart rates. We test the second case, not the first.
- Battery life as measured, not as claimed. Marketing battery numbers assume conservative use; ours assume always-on HR, daily notifications, and one tracked workout every other day. We disclose both.
- Subscription model and data portability. Can you read your numbers without paying monthly? Can you export raw data? Will the company still let you in if you stop paying?
- Cross-platform support. A tracker that only works fully on iOS or only on Samsung is a worse tracker, regardless of its sensors.
- Track record on discontinuations. This is the lesson the Basis Peak left us with: Intel switched off the cloud and 200,000 watches became paperweights. We watch how manufacturers handle end-of-life. Garmin has the best record (12+ years of Connect continuity); Fitbit has now been through one ownership change without breaking sync; Apple is reliably good; Withings recovered well from its 2016-2018 Nokia detour; Oura is the youngest and the least tested on this front.
