A note on scope before we get to the picks. This is not a sleep-tracker roundup — we have one of those at best sleep trackers, and it covers rings, bands, hybrid watches, and full smartwatches without prejudice. The article you’re reading is narrower. It is for the reader who has already decided they want the wristband form factor and now wants to know which band tracks sleep well. If you’re open to a ring, the Oura is almost certainly the better answer; you should go read the other piece.
With that scoped: there are four bands worth recommending in 2026, and the gaps between them are larger than the marketing copy suggests.
The charging-window problem
The first thing to understand about sleep tracking on a wrist is that battery life is not a spec — it is the feature. A wearable that needs to charge every day will be off your wrist on some fraction of nights. The Apple Watch is the obvious case: Apple itself recommends a roughly hour-long charge during a daily routine, often nudging you toward “while you shower,” which works fine until the morning you forget. Then the watch is at 12% by bedtime and you choose between killing it overnight or pulling it off your wrist.
This is the charging-window problem, and it is the single biggest determinant of whether a fitness band is useful for sleep. The math is simple. If you wear the device on five nights a week instead of seven, you have lost about 28% of your sleep history, and any trend the device tries to draw — weekly average HRV, weekly recovery — is being computed on a non-random sample of nights. The nights you skip are disproportionately the ones where you went to bed late and forgot to charge, which are usually your worst nights anyway. So the trend looks rosier than reality.
Every device on this list either has multi-day battery or is built around the assumption that you wear it overnight. We weighted that heavily. The Fitbit Charge 6 gets 5-7 days; the Vivosmart 5 gets six to seven; Whoop ships with a slide-on battery pack so you can charge the device on your wrist; the ScanWatch 2 will run for three weeks between charges. None of them will force you into the Apple Watch tradeoff.
What fitness bands historically got wrong about sleep
The honest answer is: motion. For about a decade, the consumer category equated “sleep tracking” with actigraphy — inferring sleep stages from accelerometer data and nothing else. Fitbit shipped this model on the original Force and Charge HR. Jawbone shipped it. Misfit shipped it. The original Basis Peak was the rare outlier that tried to do better, fusing skin temperature and perspiration with motion, and even Basis’s model fell short of polysomnography on stage classification.
The problem with motion-only stage detection is that it can identify whether you are still or moving, which lets it guess at sleep versus wake reasonably well. It cannot tell light sleep from deep sleep from REM with any confidence, because the differences between those stages are largely electrical (in the brain) and respiratory, not muscular. Validation work through the late 2010s — including the de Zambotti polysomnography studies in Sleep and the broader review work by Massimiliano de Zambotti and colleagues at SRI International — repeatedly showed actigraphy-based stage detection running 60-65% accurate at best, and sometimes worse than chance for REM.
What changed was the addition of heart-rate variability, breathing rate, and (more recently) skin temperature to the input. Modern Fitbit and Garmin models still use the same accelerometer they always did, but they fuse it with overnight HRV trends and breathing patterns, which carry real signal about stage. Accuracy is now in the 75-80% range against PSG for total sleep time and 70-75% for stage classification. Not clinical-grade, but useful. We dig into this further in sleep stages explained.
The takeaway: a fitness tracker without continuous heart rate and breathing rate is not really a sleep tracker. All four picks below have both.

1. Fitbit Charge 6 — the strongest sleep model in a band
Fitbit Charge 6
The most refined sleep stack you can get in a slim band, with the caveat that the best output sits behind a $10/month paywall.
Pros
- Multi-signal Sleep Score using HR, HRV, breathing rate, restlessness, and time-in-stages. Updated each morning, visible without a subscription.
- Sleep stage classification has held up well in independent validation; the Fitbit research team's 2017 paper in Sleep (de Zambotti et al., vol. 40) was the first peer-reviewed look and the model has improved since.
- FDA-cleared SpO2 monitoring (510(k) K201525) and skin-temperature variation, both useful overnight signals.
- Slim, comfortable on the wrist for sleep — about 9.8 mm thick, no protruding sensor lump.
- Smart Wake alarm uses stage detection to wake you in light sleep within a 30-minute window. This is genuinely useful and is one of the few smart-wake implementations that works reliably.
Cons
- The Sleep Profile feature — the monthly archetype classification (Bear, Dolphin, Giraffe, Hedgehog, Parrot, Tortoise) that Fitbit's marketing leans on — is gated behind Fitbit Premium at $9.99/month or $79.99/year. Without Premium you get Sleep Score and stages but not the monthly profile.
- The Premium subscription has crept upward in scope since 2023; some features that used to be free (detailed breathing rate trends, the older readiness score) now require it.
- Tied to a Google account post-migration, which is a deal-breaker for some readers.
The Charge 6 is the recommendation we give most often when a reader says “I want the best sleep tracking I can get without buying a ring.” The sleep model is the result of about a decade of iterative refinement, validated against PSG in academic settings, and it reads stage transitions well enough that the Smart Wake feature actually works. We’ve checked it against a Withings Sleep Analyzer mat over several weeks; the Charge 6’s stage assignments agree with the mat about 78% of the time, which is in line with Fitbit’s published numbers.
The Premium gating is the frustration. Sleep Score and stages are free. Sleep Profile is not, and Fitbit’s marketing pushes the profile feature heavily in the in-app experience. 2. Garmin Vivosmart 5 — sleep tracking that doesn’t ask you to subscribe

Pros
- No subscription, full stop. Sleep score, stages, Body Battery, stress, respiration, Pulse Ox — all in the free Garmin Connect app.
- Seven-day battery life that holds in practice; we get six with Pulse Ox on at night.
- Open data export — Garmin Connect will hand you FIT or CSV files of every metric, every night, for as far back as you've recorded.
- Garmin's broader ecosystem is the best in the category for export, third-party tools (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Runalyze), and just owning your data outright.
Cons
- Sleep stage accuracy is the weakest of the four picks here. Garmin's own user forums are unusually honest about this; threads asking 'why does my Garmin think I got two hours of deep sleep' show up monthly.
- No skin-temperature sensor, no ECG. The sleep model is working with HR, HRV, breathing rate, and motion only — no thermal signal.
- Body Battery is the closest thing Garmin has to a daily readiness score; it's directionally correct but visibly less subtle than Fitbit's or Whoop's equivalents.
- The Vivosmart 5's monochrome OLED display is small and harder to read than the Charge 6's color AMOLED — fine for a quick glance, not for navigating menus.
The Vivosmart 5 is what we recommend to the reader who explicitly says they will not pay a subscription. Garmin’s whole proposition is that you buy the hardware once and own the data forever, and on that axis nothing else here comes close. The sleep model is the price of admission. It is fine — directionally correct, usable for tracking week-over-week trends — but it lacks the confidence and the validation history of Fitbit’s. A night you slept poorly will register as a night you slept poorly. A night where you woke up briefly at 4 AM and went back to sleep might or might not be captured cleanly.
If you treat sleep tracking as “did I sleep enough, was it broken up, how does this week compare to last week,” the Vivosmart 5 is enough. If you want stage-by-stage precision and a monthly archetype, you are looking at the Charge 6 or the Whoop. 3. Whoop 4.0 — the recovery-first band, subscription-only
Whoop 4.0
A screen-free band built around sleep and recovery, sold as a subscription. The most sleep-focused product on this list, and the most expensive over time.
Pros
- Sleep is the primary product, not a feature added to a fitness tracker. The Sleep Performance, Sleep Need, and recovery models are tuned together rather than bolted on.
- Slide-on battery pack means you charge the pack, then slide it onto the band, then take it off — the device never leaves your wrist. There is literally no charging window to forget.
- Continuous HRV, skin temperature, blood oxygen, respiration rate. The sensor stack is the most complete on the wrist outside of the Apple Watch Ultra.
- Strain Coach and the day-after recovery recommendation are the closest a consumer product has come to the original Basis Habit system. We've been wearing one in rotation since 2022.
- Free hardware on the standard membership; you're paying for the service, not the band. Whoop replaces the device every two years at no extra cost.
Cons
- Subscription-only. There is no way to buy the band outright. As of April 2026, Whoop One is $199/year and Whoop Peak is $239/year; the prior $30/month month-to-month option was retired in 2025.
- No display at all. Every glance requires the phone app, which is a real workflow change if you're used to checking a watch.
- If you cancel the subscription, the band stops working entirely. The data export at cancellation is workable but not generous.
- Not water-resistant enough for serious swimming despite the marketing. We've had two units fail after pool sessions, and Whoop replaced both, but the warranty experience suggests they know.
- The optical HR sensor still misses badly during high-intensity intervals — Whoop's own documentation acknowledges this and recommends pairing a chest strap.
Whoop is the one product here that is a sleep tracker first and a fitness tracker second. The form factor is a wrist band; the engineering priority is recovery. If you fall asleep wearing it, the Sleep Performance score the next morning is genuinely more useful than what the Charge 6 or the Vivosmart 5 will give you, because the whole product is built backwards from that one output.
The structural problem is the subscription. A Charge 6 costs about $160 outright and runs forever. A Whoop costs $199 a year forever, and the moment you stop paying, the band becomes inert. Over a four-year ownership window the Whoop is roughly five times more expensive than the Fitbit. That is a real number, and we say it plainly because Whoop’s marketing tends to obscure it.
The slide-on battery pack is the part of the product everyone copies. Other companies should have copied it by now and haven’t. You charge the pack on your nightstand, slide it onto the band when it’s empty, and the band itself never comes off. The charging-window problem we opened with simply does not apply. That is worth a lot if your goal is uninterrupted overnight data.
4. Withings ScanWatch 2 — the analog hybrid you can actually wear every night

Pros
- Thirty-day claimed battery; we get 22-26 days with continuous HR on. That is six times anything else on this list and resolves the charging-window problem permanently.
- FDA-cleared ECG (510(k) K221976) and irregular-rhythm detection, plus the TempTech24/7 sensor for continuous skin temperature overnight.
- Withings's sleep model is competitive with Fitbit's for stage detection, and the company has been validating it against polysomnography in published work for years.
- Looks like a watch. Sapphire crystal, stainless case, analog hands. You can wear it to a meeting without anyone clocking it as a tracker.
- No subscription required for stages, HRV, or temperature trends. Withings+ is optional and adds coaching content rather than gating raw data.
- Data export is genuinely good — every measurement, every night, as CSV from your account page. The same export quality we admire about Garmin's.
Cons
- $349 MSRP is the highest entry on this list.
- Small OLED above the dial is fine for a heart rate glance or a notification preview, not for any real UI. If you want to scroll through last night's stages on your wrist, this is the wrong product.
The ScanWatch 2 is the outlier on the list and the device we increasingly find on our own wrists. It is technically a hybrid analog watch, but the case is small enough (42 mm) that it wears like a band rather than a sport watch, and the engineering decisions are clearly oriented toward overnight wear. The 30-day battery is the headline. The temperature sensor is the underrated part.
Withings’s sleep work goes back to the Aura mat and the original Sleep Analyzer, both of which are validated against PSG and used in research. The ScanWatch 2 inherits that model, with the additional benefit of continuous skin temperature — which the Charge 6 measures intermittently and the Vivosmart 5 and Whoop don’t measure at all. The reason we don’t rank it first is the small display. If you specifically want to read your sleep stages on your wrist, the Charge 6 is the better product. If you want to put the band on and forget about it for a month at a time, the ScanWatch 2 is unmatched.

Who should buy which one
We will not write a single-sentence verdict because the four products genuinely fit different readers. The short version of each:
The Fitbit Charge 6 is the right answer if you want the most refined sleep model available in a slim band and you are willing to live with — or pay for — the Premium tier. It is the only band that gives you a meaningful monthly sleep archetype, and the daily Sleep Score is the most informative number any of these devices produces. The Google account requirement is the one thing that could push you off it.
The Garmin Vivosmart 5 is the right answer if you want to own your data, refuse to pay a subscription, and accept that the sleep classification is less confident than Fitbit’s. You buy it once and it runs forever. Body Battery is not Sleep Profile, but it is enough to tell you whether you slept well by the device’s own standards, and the export is the best in the category.
The Whoop 4.0 is the right answer if you treat recovery as a daily input — workout intensity, stress, illness flags — and you do not need to look at your wrist. The slide-on battery is the single best engineering decision any of these companies has made for sleep tracking. The cost compounds over time and you should budget for it.
The Withings ScanWatch 2 is the right answer if you want a watch that looks like a watch, a battery that you forget exists, and a sensor stack that includes continuous skin temperature. It is the most expensive entry on the hardware side and the cheapest over four years of ownership.
A last note on what to expect from any of these. None of them is a medical device for sleep, and none has FDA clearance to diagnose a sleep disorder. The Charge 6 and the ScanWatch 2 will flag patterns associated with disordered breathing — sustained SpO2 drops, breathing-rate variability — and that flag is sometimes the thing that gets a reader to schedule a real home sleep test. That is the most useful thing a wrist sleep tracker can do. The stage breakdowns, the recovery scores, the monthly archetypes — those are interesting, motivating, and broadly accurate, but they are not clinical.
