The question we get more than any other is some version of: “I miss my Basis Peak. What do I buy now?” It is a more specific question than it sounds. The Peak had a particular shape: square OLED on a slim band, continuous heart rate without a workout button, four-day battery, multi-sensor sleep. Most modern wearables only hit two or three of those at once. What follows is the five we would actually buy, ordered by how close they get.

A short note on what the original Basis Peak was trying to be, because that defines “closest.” It was a daily-wear band, not a sport watch and not a smartwatch. It assumed you would put it on, charge it twice a week, and look at the screen for the time and your heart rate. The app did the analysis in the background. You were not meant to swipe through it.

If that sounds like a Fitbit Charge, that is because the Charge line is the surviving branch of that idea. Almost every other category (smartwatches, hybrid watches, smart rings) solves a different problem and only overlaps with the Peak by accident.

How we ranked these

We weighted five things, in this order:

  1. Continuous, all-day heart rate without an active workout (the Peak’s headline feature in 2014).
  2. Battery life measured in days, not hours.
  3. Multi-signal sleep tracking: heart rate variability, skin temperature, motion, ideally respiration. Motion-only sleep is a step backward.
  4. A readable display you can glance at on the wrist.
  5. Low-fuss daily wear: comfortable for sleep, water-resistant, no daily charging ritual.

We deliberately did not weight smartwatch features (notifications, music, contactless payments). The Peak only barely had notifications, and adding them turns this into a different list.

Subscriptions are a tiebreaker that gets heavier the further down you go. The Basis app was free for the life of the product. A modern wearable that puts sleep stages behind a paywall is, on that dimension, worse than a device from 2014.

1. Fitbit Charge 6 — the closest spiritual successor

Pros

  • Continuous heart rate with a much-improved 2024 optical stack; Fitbit's own validation against ECG shows median error under 5% during steady-state cardio.
  • Six-to-seven days of real-world battery life with always-on display off; we get five with notifications on.
  • Multi-signal sleep tracking including SpO2, skin temperature variation, and breathing rate, with stages reported every morning.
  • FDA-cleared ECG (510(k) K212282) and irregular-rhythm notification, features the Peak never had.
  • Slim, light, comfortable for sleep. Closer to a Peak on the wrist than any other tracker in 2026.
  • Google Maps and YouTube Music shortcuts on the wrist if you also carry a Pixel.

Cons

  • Fitbit Premium ($9.99/month) gates the daily readiness score and the more detailed sleep profile. You can live without it but the marketing pushes hard.
  • Data export is via Google Takeout and is awkward compared to Garmin's. There is no single-button CSV.
  • Tied to a Google account since the 2023 migration; if you had a long-standing Fitbit account, you have already had to switch.
Best for: Anyone who wants a no-thinking-required replacement for a Basis Peak with continuous HR and multi-day battery.

The Charge 6 is the product we point most former Peak owners at because the daily experience is closest. You put it on, you forget about it, the data is there when you want it. The screen is an AMOLED rectangle on a slim band, which is exactly what the Peak’s square OLED was reaching for in 2014 with the technology that existed.

Two real caveats. The first is the subscription. Fitbit Premium is not required for raw sleep stages or heart rate, but the daily readiness score (the closest analog to the Basis “habit” system) sits behind it, and that grates. The second is the Google migration, which moved every Fitbit account onto Google credentials by 2025. If your Peak-era Fitbit account is still floating around somewhere, you have already been forced to merge it. 2. Garmin Vivosmart 5 — the no-subscription option

Pros

  • No subscription, ever. Sleep stages, Body Battery, stress, respiration, Pulse Ox, all in the free Garmin Connect app.
  • Excellent data export: you can pull a full FIT or CSV of any day, week, or year from Garmin Connect without paying a cent.
  • Seven-day battery life that holds up in practice; we get six with Pulse Ox on at night.
  • Compatible with third-party tools (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Runalyze) via Garmin's open API.

Cons

  • OLED display is small and monochrome. Readable, but less of a glance device than the Charge 6's color AMOLED.
  • No ECG, no skin-temperature variation, no irregular-rhythm notification. Sensor stack is one generation behind Fitbit's.
  • Sleep stage accuracy is the weakest of the five picks here; Garmin's own forum threads are honest about this.
  • Garmin Connect's UI is dated and the app insists on showing you ten different scores you did not ask for.
Best for: Former Peak owners who care about owning their data and refuse to pay a monthly fee for sleep stages.

If we were buying for a friend who specifically said “I do not want a subscription and I want my data,” this is the recommendation. Garmin Connect lets you bulk-export everything you have ever recorded, in standard formats, with one button. After watching Intel turn off the Basis cloud and take all that data with it, that matters more to us than another decimal place of sleep-stage accuracy.

The compromise is the sensor generation. Garmin caught up on optical HR around 2022 but has not pushed ECG into the Vivosmart line, and the sleep model is visibly less confident than Fitbit’s. If you treat sleep as a directional metric (“did I get more or less than usual”), it is fine. If you want stage-by-stage precision, the Charge 6 or the Oura is better.

3. Withings ScanWatch 2 — the hybrid with the longest battery on the list

A real analog watch face with a tiny OLED for data. Thirty-day battery, FDA-cleared ECG, the only pick here that looks like a watch.

Pros

  • Thirty days of battery life on the headline spec; we get 22-26 in practice with continuous HR on, which is still six times anything else on this list.
  • FDA-cleared ECG (510(k) K221976) and irregular-rhythm detection, plus the new TempTech24/7 module for continuous skin temperature.
  • Hybrid form: sapphire glass, stainless case, analog hands. Looks like a watch in a meeting; data lives on the small OLED above the dial.
  • Withings's data export is genuinely good. You can pull every measurement you have ever recorded as CSV from your account page.
  • No subscription required for stages, HRV, or temperature trends; Withings+ is optional and adds coaching content, not raw data.

Cons

  • Small OLED is fine for a heart rate or a notification glance, not for navigating a UI. If you want to scroll workouts on your wrist, this is the wrong watch.
  • $349 MSRP is the highest on this list.
Best for: Someone who wants the Peak's continuous-HR-plus-sleep value proposition but is tired of looking at a screen on their wrist.

The ScanWatch 2 is the closest in spirit to the original Basis B1, the round, watch-shaped predecessor to the Peak, rather than to the Peak itself. We include it because it solves the “I do not want a smartwatch but I want the data” problem better than anything else, and the 30-day battery removes the charging ritual entirely. For a lot of Peak refugees that is the point.

The FDA clearance is real and worth mentioning by number: 510(k) K221976 for the ECG function, with continuous-rhythm-notification clearance added by amendment in 2023. That is one of the better-validated consumer ECG systems on the market. The TempTech24/7 sensor measures skin temperature continuously through the night, which Withings uses for cycle tracking and illness detection. That is closer to the Basis multi-sensor approach than anything Fitbit ships.

4. Oura Ring Gen 3 — the multi-signal philosophy, on a different finger

  • Multi-signal physiology (PPG, infrared PPG, skin temperature, motion, SpO2) feeding a single Readiness score. The Basis habit system, eight years on.
  • Best-in-class sleep stage accuracy among consumer wearables; the de Zambotti 2019 polysomnography study (Sleep, vol. 42) put Oura within minutes of PSG for total sleep time.
  • Six-to-seven days of battery on the Gen 3, which is more than any wrist device with a screen.
  • Comfortable for sleep in a way no watch is. Most users forget they are wearing it within a week.
  • Genuinely good data export: every metric, every night, as CSV from your account.

Cons

  • Required subscription ($5.99/month) since Gen 3 launched. Without it the ring becomes a step counter. This is the single biggest reason we did not rank it higher.
  • No display. Every glance requires opening the phone app.
  • Hand-based PPG misses workout heart rate badly under load; Oura concedes this in their own documentation and now recommends a chest strap for intervals.
  • Sizing is finicky; you need the sizing kit, and your finger size changes with the seasons.
  • Replaceable only by buying a new ring. There is no battery service.
Best for: Sleep and recovery first, workouts second. People who do not want anything on their wrist.

The Oura is the most intellectually honest descendant of the Basis Peak. The Basis app’s “habit” view, the thing that tried to learn whether your caffeine, late nights, and recovery were trending the right direction, is what Oura’s Readiness score has been doing, well, for several generations now. If the Peak had survived another decade and gotten out of Intel, it would probably have looked something like Oura’s product roadmap.

We rank it fourth, not first, because of two structural problems. The first is the subscription, which we have written about elsewhere and which the original Basis simply did not have. The second is the form factor: a ring is a fundamentally different product, and someone asking for a Peak replacement usually wants a wrist device. 5. Apple Watch SE 2nd Gen — the modern smartwatch reference point

The default smartwatch, included here so the comparison is honest. Furthest in spirit from the Peak, closest in market dominance.

Pros

  • Best in class for general smartwatch features: notifications, payments, fall detection, third-party apps.
  • Excellent optical heart rate, validated repeatedly in peer-reviewed work (Shcherbina et al., Journal of Personalized Medicine, 2017, remains the canonical comparison).
  • Cellular option means it can leave the phone behind on a run.

Cons

  • Eighteen-hour battery. You will charge it every night, which means no sleep tracking unless you split the charging between morning and bed.
  • No ECG, no temperature sensor, no SpO2 on the SE; those live on the Series 10 and Ultra 2.
  • Apple Health export is workable but verbose, and the data lives in a closed platform that does not love third-party tools.
  • iPhone-only. If you carry an Android, this entry is irrelevant.
  • The least Peak-like product on this list by a wide margin.
Best for: iPhone users who want a competent fitness tracker and accept charging every day in exchange for everything else.

We include the Apple Watch SE because any honest 2026 list has to acknowledge that it is the device most people buy. If you walk into a store asking what the modern equivalent of a Basis Peak is, an employee on commission is going to point at an Apple Watch. They are wrong; the daily-wear, multi-day-battery experience is closer on the Charge 6. But the reflex is real, and pretending otherwise would be silly.

If you have an iPhone and you do not specifically want what the Peak gave you, the SE is a reasonable default. If you do want what the Peak gave you, scroll back up to the Charge 6.

What the Peak got right that the modern market quietly absorbed

The Peak in 2014 looked like a moonshot. Most of its headline features now ship on $99 devices. Three specifically:

Continuous heart rate became the default. In 2014 it was a checkbox most products did not have. By 2017 it was unremarkable. Every device on this list does it; the differentiation has moved on to skin temperature, ECG, and HRV.

Multi-signal sleep tracking became the Oura playbook. The Peak’s combination of heart rate, skin temperature, perspiration, and motion was the unusual thing about its sleep model. Eight years later that is more or less Oura’s core pitch, with PPG and skin temperature in roughly the same role. Fitbit has copied parts of this approach; Withings has copied more. Motion-only sleep tracking is now considered embarrassing.

The “single number” health metric. Basis called it Habit. Fitbit calls it Daily Readiness. Oura calls it Readiness. Garmin calls it Body Battery. Whoop calls it Recovery. They are all variations on the same idea: take the messy multi-sensor input and collapse it into a number a normal person will look at. The Peak shipped this in 2014. The industry has spent a decade refining the presentation rather than the underlying concept.

The one thing the Peak got right that the market did not fully absorb is battery life as a feature, not a spec sheet line. The Apple Watch normalized daily charging, and the industry mostly followed. The Charge 6, the Vivosmart 5, and the ScanWatch 2 are partial counter-examples; the SE is the rule. We think the Peak’s four-day battery is part of why people remember it fondly, and part of why the ScanWatch 2 keeps winning fans every time we put it on the list.

The honest summary

If you want one sentence: buy the Fitbit Charge 6 unless you have a specific reason not to, in which case the next reason picks the next product. No subscription? Vivosmart 5. Want a real watch? ScanWatch 2. No wrist device at all? Oura. Already an iPhone smartwatch person? SE.

The Peak was unusual because it was early. The hard part about replacing it in 2026 is not finding a device that does what it did; most $200 trackers do. The hard part is finding one that does it without a monthly fee, without locking you into a single vendor’s app, and without assuming you want to charge it every night. Two of the five products here clear that bar. The other three clear two out of three. None of them are the Peak, because the Peak does not exist anymore, and you should not try to buy one.
